Project Reflection
Paragraph 1: Project Description
The Honors Humanities students were assigned with the task to choose a topic of our choice, and research the history behind that topic. This included making a thesis statement that involved what our historical research was looking into, and what stance we took. For my project, I was interested the the history of fashion and how fashion trends have taken a tremendous change over time. My initial research questions included; Is fashion an effective tool for social change? In what ways did World War II impact women’s fashion? Did the United States fashion trends help the progressive movements in other countries? How did the first miniskirt/shorts for women affect the women’s revolution? My final research question was: In what ways have cultural standards for fashion influenced the women’s role in the society of the United States throughout history? My topic and question remained the same throughout the project, and my main thesis statement worked very well with the topic and final question. I chose this topic because fashion has always been an interest of mine, and I knew that fashion has a lot of interesting and deep history inside of it, and I was excited to learn these things. Overall, I am happy I chose the topic I did, and surprised at what I learned throughout the project.
Paragraph 2: Habits of Heart and Mind + Personal/Academic Growth
The Animas High School Habits of Heart and Mind truly resonated with me throughout this project. To be more specific, the Perseverance and the Refinement side of the Habits helped me create a beautiful piece of work and a project that I am proud of. I used perseverance to help me through the struggles that I came across, like accidentally deleting my project that was online, and refinement to complete the final draft of my essay, and fixed what needed to be. Perseverance was a big part in my project because without it, I could have not completed what I had done. I used perseverance in every assignment, and pushed through mental barriers like procrastination. By using refinement, I made my essay easy to understand and after corrections, I made sure that the essay spoke to every piece of my thesis statement, as the first draft was too short and did not answer the main research question. Through using Perseverance and Refinement, I learned that during my projects, I can always do better, and after this project, I know how to push and challenge myself academically even further. This project was such a delightful experience, and the sense of freedom within the project was by far the best thing that I found.
Paragraph 3: Refinement on your work
Two substantial revisions that I made to my project include how I added almost 2 more full pages onto my second draft of my research synthesis paper, and how I added two articles to my magazine to accompany the magazine covers. The first draft of my research synthesis paper was only 2 pages, and did not even answer my research question to the fullest extent, and did not elaborate on my thesis statement. I could have went further in depth with my thesis statement, added pictures to refer to what I was talking about in my paragraphs, and head lines of the different historical time frames within my essay. In addition, I could have added detail and shown more evidence to back up the claims I was making, and in my second draft I did just this. For my project, my original plan was to just have the magazine covers. After taking the time to create this, I began to think that an article with pictures showing what a page of the magazine might look like would add clarity and intellect. I added two two pages for each cover, being careful to add important information to elaborate on what was on the magazine covers. I am glad to have put these revisions on to my final project, and I think that I made the best work that I could have.
Paragraph 4: Refinement for next year’s honors
If I had to share a few tips for next year’s honors students, it would be to a) make sure you choose the topic for your project on something you truly like to do because you will be working on this for 5 months, and b) do not put off the work until right before the due date. Choosing something you really want to do helps you a lot in the future, and will make your project more fun to work on, and make it feel less like a task and more like a hobby. Also, completing the tasks right after or soon after they are assigned will keep you on top of things, and create less stress as the due dates come closer. Doing this also creates good study habits for the future. All in all, have a ton of fun with this project!
