Pre-Link Reflection and Anticipation
My LINK Internship will take place in downtown Durango, Colorado, at Marketing Concepts Squared, or MC^2. MC^2 is a business that markets for local businesses and companies of all sorts. MC^2 creates business layouts, newsletters, websites, and social media accounts like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and more! MC^2 represents businesses all throughout Durango, and focuses their products to the public, and focuses on doing whatever it takes to help that specific company! Marketing Concepts represents over 20 local businesses, and has helped them reach their goals! I will be mostly working with Jessika, the owner of MC^2, and her assistant Jen. Jessika will be my main mentor, and is the main leader of the company. Jessika creates business plans for the companies that she represents, and will do anything to help those businesses succeed. I am hoping that she will teach me what it is like to run multiple social media accounts, and how to market for multiple local businesses successfully. I am also hoping to learn how to represent a business well through multiple social media bases!
This internship relates to my personal future career goals in many ways. I am interested in Fashion Marketing specifically, but marketing as a whole fascinates me. Through this internship, I will learn what it is like to work as a marketer, and how to make things look appealing to the public. I think that by having this internship, I can work towards learning more of the ways of a marketer, and reference what I learn later on if I choose to pursue Fashion Marketing. I hope this experience teaches me things that I can use in the future, and helps me keeps my interest in the marketing world!
My project for this internship might be a year long social media layout plan for the businesses that MC^2 represents! By doing this, I will layout all of the events that the businesses are involved in, and how we can market this through their social media platforms. This would help MC^2 by creating a plan that looks far enough into the future for them to reference when they are working on the social media accounts. This layout would also help the businesses that MC^2 represents be more organized of their events throughout the year, as well as help MC^2 be more organized by laying out all of the events that are coming up. I hope to learn how to create a great business plan and organize events in a logical way. In addition, I hope to learn how social media ties into each business, and how to best represent a company through different social media accounts.
The skills and knowledge that I need to make this a great internship include; to know how to take great notes, how to use the social media accounts that I am involved with in order to benefit a larger business, and how to start building a business plan.
The challenges that have arisen for me during the internship process revolve around the reaching out part. I emailed close to 50 different potential mentors, very few actually replied. I was upset and frustrated to see that there was such a small turn out, but I am excited that I am able to work locally. Through this process, I have learned that next time, I need to follow up with a phone call, instead of just with an email, and that I should never give up when it comes to looking for what I want!
I am SO excited about my internship placement! I am thrilled to learn more about marketing, and I can't wait to be working with social media for 2 weeks! I feel like I will always be entertained and busy working on a task, and I am happy that I will be helping to represent over 20 different local businesses in my hometown!
1st Week Internship:
Mentor-
My mentors name is Donna. She helps with selling the dresses, taking care of the store, and choosing which dresses to sell. She will be helping me design my "Fashion Fusion" project. I hope that we will make a great team and design a beautiful piece. I also hope she will be able to show me what it is like to work in and run and business.
Goals-
My career goals are to find something that I love to do, and something that makes me happy every day. I hope that this LINK Internship will bring me happiness as well as a sense of purpose in the fashion industry. This experience will either ensure my current passion for fashion, or ensure that I should look towards something else as a career goal.
Project-
The project that I will be completing during my LINK Internship will be (hopefully) completing a clothing piece that is from raw and unconventional items, that is beautiful in it's own way and wearable. This project helps Occasions Bridal because I will be teaming up with the business when working on this piece, and showcasing the things that I learned and created in order to benefit the bridal store. This project will benefit to the local economy because the "Fashion Fusion" project is a fundraiser for our local Durango Arts Center. I hope to learn if I like fashion design or do not, and learn how to create something with raw materials.
Research-
Going into this internship, I need to hone in my creative thinking skills, as well as my creative art skills. I need to know how to work in a group format, and share my ideas willingly.
Overcoming Obstacles-
A major challenge that I had while in the process of setting up my internship was people that I has e-mailed simply not replying. If I had to guess, I must have sent 100 e-mails over the entire course of trying to find an internship. Barely anyone had replied, and it was extremely frustrating and sad. I handled this challenge by sending more e-mails, following up, and trying other places to contact. I learned that if you try hard enough, someone will eventually be open and willing to reply.
Feelings-
I am excited and nervous for my LINK internship. I hope that I enjoy working on the "Fashion Fusion" project, and that the outcome is good. Although I was not able to travel outside of Durango, (which was my ultimate goal,) I am happy and excited to have this opppurtunity.
